Create a Structured Backup of Your Old System

Prepare for Qubes OS by moving only needed app data, keeping old files offline, and leaving browser profiles and unnecessary state behind.

Create a structured backup of your old system before replacing it. Copy its data to external storage and verify that the copy can be read without the old computer.

Treat every file from the old system as potentially exposed to malware until you have reviewed its type, source, and actual need on the new installation.

Sort by the future application KUHB, not by an old operating-system account or a generic Qubes OS VM. Separate what must return to daily use from what can remain offline:

Put as little as possible under restore-now. Prefer simple files and application exports over complete profiles. Move the required website addresses and logins into the KeePassXC database instead of migrating a browser profile, cookies, extensions, or saved sessions. Keep old and rarely used data on a separate air-gapped laptop instead of restoring it to the new daily installation.

Reconnect the migration disk and open files from every restore-now directory. Do not replace the old system until the required copy works without it. Do not import airgap-only merely because space is available.

This disk contains manual migration data. It is not a KUHBS backup archive. After KUHBS creates the destination application KUHBs, import the selected data into their persistent KUHs by hand.
